IFLTS: 'Hey, That's No Way to Say Goodbye,' Leonard Cohen

'Hey, That's No Way to Say Goodbye,' Leonard Cohen
From 1968's 'Songs of Leonard Cohen'

'Hey, That's No Way to Say Goodbye,' off [Leonard Cohen's] first album, is one of the most perfect songs ever written. His command of the English language and the delivery of that song is really one of the most perfect things I've ever heard. He epitomizes the argument for putting music -- songwriting -- into a literary category. And obviously he was a poet first, but the songs that he wrote were so perfect and so well-composed. The words that he chose seemed extremely conscious and thought out in a beautiful way.

The DL: Can You Crack Nick Cave's Poker Face?

The DL called our guests' bluffs and asked them to give us their best poker faces. Check out some seriously stoic mugs from Silversun Pickups, Bright Eyes, Nick Cave and Grinderman, Clinic and even Hanson.

The DL: Bright Eyes Gets Personal

We sat down with Conor Oberst, and got really deep. Like, 'Abyss' deep. Get the story on the band name, album leaks, his favorite artist and plenty more.

The DL: Hanson Gets Love From Andrew W.K.

Bright Eyes' Apocalyptic New Album

The devastation of the world's recent natural disasters will play a huge role in Conor Oberst's new album, which, as he revealed to Spin, will be a thematically dark work, focused on the impending end of the world. "There's a feeling in the world right now like everything is unravelling, but maybe that's not a bad thing. I'm not convinced that the human race is good for this planet anyway."

The album was written mostly in a stream-of-consciousness style, which can be confusing, but fortunately (unlike James Joyce), Oberst is skilled in ESP. "Telepathy is a big theme. If you just concentrate, you'll know what I'm talking about." Cool. Like that 'Jaws' sequel where Brody's wife is psychically connected to the shark.

Hungry sharks aside, for those of you who miss the romantic side of Bright Eyes, go ahead and revel in the bleeding heart sentiments of 'Bowl of Oranges' while you eagerly await the apocalypse.
